Paul, Apostle of Christ tells the story of Luke as he risks his life to visit Paul, who is a captive in a Roman prison under Nero’s rule. The story provides us with a look into their struggles as they go against a determined emperor and the frailties of the human spirit in order to live out the Gospel of Jesus Christ and spread the message to the world.
The movie was carefully written and great pains were taken to maintain biblical accuracy. Using scripture as the only reference, director Andrew Hyatt recreated the story of Paul on film, including the close relationship with Luke, whom at the end of Paul’s life, at his own peril, traveled in and out of the prison carrying Paul’s writings to the community of believers
Paul’s letters and writings were vital to the spreading of Christianity, and became a large part of the New Testament. The story in Paul, Apostle of Christ focuses on how, despite persecution and peril, they shared Jesus’ message of love, redemption and forgiveness with a small community of believers who in turn, took it to the whole world.
Official Movie Synopsis:
Paul (Faulkner), who goes from the most infamous persecutor of Christians to Christ’s most influential apostle, is spending his last days in a dark and bleak prison cell awaiting execution by Emperor Nero. Luke(Caviezel), his friend and physician, risks his life when he ventures into Rome to visit him. Paul is under the watchful eye of Mauritius (Martinez), the prison’s prefect, who seeks to understand how this broken old man can pose such a threat. But before Paul’s death sentence can be enacted, Luke resolves to write another book, one that details the beginnings of “The Way” and the birth of what will come to be known as the church. Their faith challenged an empire. But their words changed the world.
The movie does have a PG-13 rating, for some violent content and disturbing images but it is important to note that these are based on actual incidents as described in scripture. The film promises to be a great Christian film that can serve as a reminder to believers to go forth and spread the gospel, regardless of the cost.
