David C Cook Family Devotionals Series
I have always loved family devotionals that each person in the family can learn from no matter how old they are. Over the years, I have taught junior/kid’s church, Sunday School for teens and upper elementary, and even toddlers and studied many different curriculums and programs. The ones that are always my favorite are ones that allow me to teach groups of varying ages from one source.
The new David C Cook Family Devotionals are designed to be used with children (of any age) as a way to help them grow in their relationship with Christ in all his forms. The family devotional series is made up of three books and they each contain 52 lessons. Each book is focused on a different part of the Trinity and helps to nurture a child’s growing relationship with God in each of these parts.
Knowing God The Father is a devotional book to help you and your child/children know God the Father better, love Him more deeply, and serve Him more effectively. This is done with a three part devotional that starts with scripture & a poetry style passage to help touch their hearts and light their imagination. The second section “Grow Your Faith” is designed for the adult to read before or quickly to themselves.
It helps you get an understanding of the 1st passage to relay to the child and be ready for any discussion they may have. Lastly, the third and final section, “Grow Your Child’s Faith” is to read aloud with the child and extends the original thoughts and apply it to their everyday life. There is also a suggested prayer that you can pray together at the end. This should only be a guide and it is strongly encouraged to let your child pray as their heart leads.
This same method is used in Knowing The Holy Spirit and Knowing Jesus. In Knowing The Holy Spirit the intention is to help you and child see the Holy Spirit side of God. It takes you into themes like how the Holy Spirit inspires scripture, encourages us, and brings hope.
In Knowing Jesus you and your child are encouraged to deepen your relationship with the one who came to earth to die for our sins. This family devotional explains how Jesus is the bread of life, the light of the world, and how He and God share everything.
The lessons that are taught in each of these books are fundamental for every growing relationship with God, no matter where you are in your spiritual journey. I would even recommend these for adults that are new believers and are looking for a simple family devotional to help them understand the many aspects of the trinity.
These family devotionals provide a theological depth in a simplified doctrine and easy-to-understand language so children remain engaged and can follow along. Both parents and children will find their faith strengthened and enjoy the time together in God’s Word.
