When I first moved out of my home, I started collecting fun cartoon character ornaments to create a whimsical tree. I still have most of these ornaments and over the years have added more with my children and husband each year. As I get older, I realize that I am drawn to ornaments that tell a story or have a meaning behind them. These are the ones we talk about every year as we decorate the tree and always makes sure to find a prime spot for first. This year, we added two very special ornaments to our tree from Macy’s Heart of Haiti program.

I received two special Heart of Haiti ornaments this year, a Metalwork Snowflake and a Metalwork Tree. These ornaments are handmade by artists in Haiti through a sustainable trade-not-aid program. Artisans make 22% of the purchase price of every item sold in the Heart of Haiti collection. These artists are able to make a living doing something that they love.  After the earthquake hit Haiti, Macy’s made a decision to carry a product line made by local artists. In 2010, this was not an easy process because the infrastructure did not exist to house to ship goods. Now, seven years later, Macy’s continues to sell these products with a full assortment of handcrafted items available at Macys.com (through the Gifts that Give Hope Collection) and in-store at select stores.

In Haiti, there are an estimated 400,000 artists (in a population of 10 million) that rely on handcrafted goods as their source of income. No other sector of employment matches this number. Macy’s Heart of Haiti program employs 550 artisans while benefitting an extended 4,500 family members.

I love unique handcrafted items and that by purchasing one for myself or as a gift, I am able to help a mother or father provide for their family. With the Macy’s Heart of Haiti Ornaments hanging on my tree, I am reminded that we need to help others and think beyond our backyard for personal home decor ideas or for presents for those on our list.  You can discover all the great sustainable gifts, home decor and other items that give back in Macy’s Heart of Haiti Line this holiday season and year round!  The Snow Flake Ornament is currently sold out, but the Metal Tree Ornament is still available as well as several other beautiful gift options.
