Deja View: The Art of Andreas Deja Exhibit
A few weeks, I attended the Pixar Coco Event in San Francisco and had the opportunity to visit the Walt Disney Family Museum on our last day there. The museum was started by Walt Disney’s daughter, Diane Disney Miller in 2012. The museum is located in the scenic Presidio of San Francisco and is full of state-of-the-art exhibits, interactive galleries, and collections that show the amazing life of Walt Disney. Just like any museum you will find special exhibitions throughout the year. Since March, they have been featuring Deja View: The Art of Andreas Deja in honor of The Lion King joining the Walt Disney Signature Collection.
Andreas Deja is known for creating some of Disney’s most iconic characters, including Scar (from The Lion King) , Jafar and larger-than-life muscle men Gaston and Hercules, to the much beloved Mama Odie and Lilo Pelekai.
I thoroughly enjoy seeing the process of how things are created and was in all my glory being able to see his original works on paper and maquettes of these famous characters.
Along with his work for Walt Disney Animation Studios, the exhibit also features some of his independent projects, including his upcoming film Mushka. Mushka features a young girl and her tiger in “a story of love and sacrifice set in Russia”and is animated in a colored pencil style.
The exhibit draws you into Deja’s work and all I could was marvel at his artistic ability. It is great to see an artist that has a range of character development and see the different stages of animation.
One of my favorite pieces in the exhibit was this sketch from Beauty and the Beast. It is not overly ornate but the detail that he captures in such a simple piece is stunning. I wishfully dream of this piece hanging on a wall in my house.
If you are interested in learning more about Andreas Deja and keeping up with his current projects, make sure you visit his blog Deja View.
